A half-up hairstyle is a useful middle ground when your child wants to wear their hair down but keeps pushing the front away from their face.
You gather part of the hair, secure it, and leave the rest loose. The challenge is choosing how much to gather and where to place it.
Start with a simple version. You can change the height, add a braid, or try different accessories once you know what feels comfortable.
Choose the Sections Before You Gather
Begin with your child’s usual hair-preparation routine.
Use your fingers or a suitable comb to separate a section from each side of the face. Bring those sections toward the back without gathering all the hair above the ears automatically.
Look at the amount you’re holding. Does it include the pieces that keep falling forward? Is there still enough loose hair underneath for the look your child wants?
The two sections don’t need to be perfectly identical. Focus on a balanced shape and comfortable placement.
Start With a Low Placement
For a first attempt, bring the gathered sections together near the back of the head rather than high on the crown.
Hold them loosely while your child looks straight ahead. Check that you haven’t pulled the front tightly or caught hair around the ears.
Secure the gathered hair with a familiar hair tie. Wrap it only as much as needed to hold the section comfortably. If the tie keeps slipping, try gathering a slightly larger section or choosing a different tie rather than pulling harder.
Have your child turn their head gently in both directions and tell you how it feels.
Adjust the Shape Before Adding Product
Check the front and sides before reaching for a styling product.
If one side looks puffier, gently rearrange that section. If the top is flatter than your child wants, use your fingertips to ease a little hair outward above the tie.
Shorter layers may stay loose around the face. You can leave them that way or use a suitable clip if your child prefers them back.
Product is optional. If you use it, follow the label directions and apply only where the style needs help.

Change One Detail for a Different Look
Once the basic style works, try one small variation.
Move the gathered section slightly higher. Make a simple three-strand braid with the secured ponytail. Or use two smaller side sections for a more relaxed finish.
For curls or coils, preserve the shape your child likes instead of combing every section flat. Gather and arrange the hair using the techniques already familiar in your routine.
If you’re considering pomade for a finishing step, view BK Kidz Hair Pomade at Walmart and check its directions and product details.
Let Your Child Check the Back
Use a second mirror or take a quick photo so your child can see the whole hairstyle.
Ask a specific question: “Would you like it higher?” or “Do you want these front pieces loose?” That gives them something concrete to decide.

A half-up hairstyle doesn’t need a complicated finish. Gather the sections that need to stay back, secure them comfortably, and leave the rest as loose or arranged as your child likes.
